Sure, 3D printers for the home have become pretty versatile, but if you want to go beyond the basics, you have to invest in some pretty heavy duty (and costly) equipment. One company wants to change that.
The new Stepcraft 2 promises to be the answer to your multifunction prayers.
What’s the Printer Like?
Named the Stepcraft 2, the new machine is being Kickstarted by a German company (notably with the same name as the printer). If that name sounds familiar, it’s thanks to the success of the original Stepcraft, which was essentially a home-based CNC machine.
The Stepcraft 2 builds on its predecessor’s capabilities by adding in 3D printing capabilities, as well as some other niceties.
“Stepcraft is the world’s first universal desktop CNC solution. Turn your ideas into reality – CNC milling, 3D printing and much more,” promises the headline on the company’s Kickstarter page.
A quick look at the machine’s features shows that promise might be more than hyperbole, as well.
“Stepcraft 2 is designed to harness your creative mind and give you a platform to turn your ideas into reality. From woodworking to machine soft metals, Stepcraft 2’S ability to mill, cut and carve gives you the power of a full CNC machine shop in a compact and extremely durable system that will fit right on your desktop,” the company explains.
There’s actually a lot to love here. First, you’ll find that the machine is available with five different size options in terms of build area.
The smallest is 210 x 210 mm, and the largest is 840 x 600 mm, so you can truly choose the right option for your working area. The fact that it combines CNC milling, 3D carving, woodworking, engraving and 3D printing into a single compact model is another huge point in its favor.
The creators point out that it actually provides more functionality than any other model on the market. It even offers form cutting, vinyl cutting and can be used for scrapbooking, too. Talk about versatile!
There are several contribution levels available. A pledge of $5 gets you a sticker and the company’s heartfelt thank you.
$25 gets you a baseball cap. There’s a big jump from that second tier to the third, which is $999.
For this, you get the “Crafty” package, which includes the printer, as well as several accessories. $1099 gets you a higher-end package.
Additional packages range from $1499 to $1699, $1899, $1999, $2399, $2599, $2999, $3099, $3299 and $3499. Each successive package builds on what came before, with the highest tier delivering pretty much everything the company has to offer.
Whether you’re looking for something to toy with at home, a way to start your business, or even an educational solution for a school, the Stepcraft 2 seems to fit the bill.
The company’s goal is $35,000 and it was exceeded early on. The project ends April 22, so if you want to back this amazing innovation, hit the link and put your money where your mouth is.
