A Weekly Roundup of 3D Printing Projects on Indiegogo

Crowdfunding has become not only acceptable, but incredibly popular. It’s used to fund the creation of everything from printed books to consumer electronics like the Oculus Rift.

It’s also being used to fund a wide range of 3D printing related projects. While there are hundreds of different worthy projects on Indiegogo alone (not counting those on Kickstarter and other crowdfunding platforms), four of the most exciting options can be found below.

Project Name: WPT 3D Printer
Goal: $60,000
Ends On: November 24, 2014

What It’s About:
The supersized WPT 3D printer promises to provide the large size that developers need, but at a price point affordable to everyone. The project head notes that the price of the printer would be up to five times lower than comparable printers on the market.

The print size of the WPT printer would be 250 x 250 x 250 mm, or 12 x 9 x 9 inches. It would offer a removable heated platform, and could operate in either standalone mode or connect to a PC.

Project Name: Rapid Lite
Goal: $15,000
Ends On: October 29, 2014

What It’s About:
The Rapid Lite project is about bringing the most affordable commercial quality 3D printer in the world to market. It’s also one of the highest resolution models available at 50 microns. The printer’s design is intentionally slim and elegant.

The build area is 200 x 200 x 200 for the base model, but it would be available in three different sizes with the largest boasting a build area of 500 x 500 x 500. All models feature a heated bed. The smallest model features a single extruder, while the second highest features dual extruders, and the largest boasts three.

Project Name: 3D Printer for Riverside High School
Goal: $3,000
Ends On: December 3, 2014

What It’s About:
3D printing technology is revolutionizing a wide number of industries around the world, but in order to develop the next generation of innovators, inventors and designers, schools and students need access to 3D printers.

This Indiegogo project is designed to make that possible for students at Riverside High School in Riverside, California by supplying them with a 3D printer to start learning the next big technology.

Project Name: Andiamo – Orthotics for Kids
Goal: £60,000
Ends On: October 20, 2014

What It’s About:
One of the single greatest advantages to 3D printing is its ability to create useful, needed things to fit a wide variety of situations. Andiamo is a project to help develop custom orthotics for children with disabilities in order to change their lives, provide greater mobility and help improve posture.

State of the art 3D printing and scanning technology allow what once took over an hour to be finished in under a minute. It also significantly reduces costs.
